SHOOTING - A GREAT HOBBY

Back in the “old days” when guns had fixed firing pins, like the .38 special revolvers where the hammer and firing pin were a single piece of steel, it was not a good idea to dry practice with those guns because it was said that the firing pin would stretch over time from not impacting the primer and this would cause it to break prematurely.

And even today, you should never dry practice with a rim-fire weapon like a .22 revolver or semi-auto handgun or rifle because the firing pin normally strikes the brass rim of the cartridge case and without the cartridge in the weapon, the firing pin will strike the hard steel face of the chamber and damage the firing pin.

Other than older, fixed firing pin weapons and any .22 rim-fire weapon, it is perfectly fine to dry practice with modern, center-fire weapons with free-floating firing pins.

This includes just about all modern weapons including Glocks, XD’s, 1911’s, modern revolvers with transfer bar type ignition systems, pump and semi-auto shotguns, bolt action, lever action, and semi-auto rifles.

One of the "Three Secrets" of Great Marksmanship is Proper Trigger Control.

You have all heard instructors tell you to Prressss the trigger or Squeeeze the trigger to get a clean, surprise trigger break. This is true, but what do you do after that first shot?

The following— little known and rarely taught— trigger control technique separates the truly proficient shooter from the average gun owner…

I am talking about "trigger reset" in semi-automatic weapons.

Trigger Reset is simply what occurs AFTER you have taken all the slack out of the trigger and preessssed the trigger until the gun fires. As the gun fires, you trap the trigger on a semi-auto weapon to the rear and then only allow it to return until you feel the "click" of the trigger resetting in the action of the weapon. The gun is now ready to fire again with minimal movement of the trigger. What does this do for your second and subsequent shots? With practice, it greatly reduces the travel of the trigger which improves your marksmanship and speed because there is less movement of the trigger.

In contrast, watch people with no knowledge of this technique shooting a semi-automatic weapon (revolvers too) and you will see their trigger finger coming entirely off the trigger during rapid fire shots— or worse, slapping the trigger. This lack of trigger reset causes significant movement of the gun, adversely affecting their marksmanship and wasting precious time between shots.

With practice, proper trigger reset in the semi-auto weapon allows you to place repeated, quick and accurate shots on target. (This is an extract from a Front Sight Report)

Dry Practice is a training technique— using an unloadedweapon— that gives you three, very important results:

Perfect and repeated Dry Practice makes for a perfectly smooth and fast presentation, perfect sight alignment, and perfect trigger control—and that creates the ability to deliver a live shot with the speed and precision you only see in action adventure movies—but with you it will be real!
